It’s time to dish out the gold. Lovers of coffee and brunch will love Melbourne, Australia. It is filled with excellent cafes and coffee shops serving the best quality brewed coffee. As a city we are very passionate about our coffee, and consider a vital part (an unquestionable) part of daily life. The coffee culture here is vast and will cater for every taste- espresso, lattes, chai, skim milk, soy milk, almond milk, iced, decaf, cold drips, etc.
Eating out for breakfast or Brunch (breakfast/lunch) is a favourite past time, and is a popular weekend activity. As this is my hometown I thought I would give you some suggestions of the BEST places to get your daily caffein hit and fantastic breakfasts.
Auction Rooms, North Melbourne. Many consider this to be one of the best coffee places in Melbourne. This converted auction room is beautifully designed, and is home to the latest coffee trends and traditional methods of brewing. They have opened a smaller pop up coffee shop directly across the road for those wishing to have takeaways.
Luncheonette, Kensington. This tiny 1950s inspired cafe located across from Kensington station is a perfect example of a place that only has a few select items and delivers them exceptionally. Their coffee is always spot on, and their lunch menu is simple but delicious. I use to come here religiously for the BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado, alfalfa and tomato) toasted sandwiches, which I am disappointed that they no longer serve. Their club sandwich is a worthy substitute.
Journeyman (formally Dukes), Prahran. This is a Prahran institution known for its quality coffee and lunch menu. It is always busy with businessmen, uni students, and mums with babies. Famous for their avocado hommus with candied bacon.
Three Bags Full, Abbotsford. Not only regarded for their coffee but also for their breakfast menu. This place is always packed on weekends with families and couples enjoying brunch.
Market Lane Coffee, Prahran Market. Located behind the market this coffee house is well respected for its brew. A great take away coffee place. I havent eaten here.
Porgie and Mr Jones, Hawthorn. Located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne this cafe is popular with the locals. I’ve only enjoyed coffee and pastries here. Both were impressive.
Dench Bakers, North Fitzroy. This fantastic bakery is also home to a cafe that serves excellent coffee and pastries. However it’s the breakfast selection that I come here for. Smashed avocado is hugely popular in Melbourne, and their avocado, danish feta, herbs & lemon on sourdough toast is one of the best.
Two Birds, One Stone, Windsor. A newcomer on the coffee scene. A perfect location just off Chapel St in Windsor, right next to Windsor Station. Serves great coffee and breakfast. Their poached eggs with mushrooms are especially good.
Garage Espresso St Kilda East. Close to the end of Chapel Street. Great for a quick coffee.
Galleon Cafe, St Kilda. Located just near Acland Street Shops this cafe is always busy serving coffees and breaky/lunch. I always have the sweet potato hash browns with poached eggs, served with spicy relish. Delish!
The Premises, Kensington. This cafe became so popular that they opened a pop up shop to cater just for takeaway service. Their coffees and toasted sandwiches (especially the ham and mustard pickle) are especially good. It is however the cooked breakfast that make me love this joint. Their poached eggs with olive tapenade, Persian feta and zucchini, lemon and currant salad served on toasted sourdough bread is the ideal filling, light, healthy breakfast.
Touchwood, Richmond. In my opinion possibly the best breakfast and coffee spot in Melbourne. Their menu happily will suit vegetarians and vegans, but it also serves a mean hamburger. The coffee is rich and creamy. I cant go past the avocado toast with beetroot relish, burnt lime, pickled spanish onion and served on toasted sourdough. Perfect with or without eggs.
That’s my golden list. The go-to places that I visit in Melbourne for a mean coffee and perfect breakfast. Enjoy!
